A health claim is “any claim that expressly, or by implication…. characterizes the relationship of any substance to a disease or health-related condition.” Examples of health claims include the following: calcium and osteoporosis, sodium and hypertension, dietary fat and cancer, dietary saturated fat and cholesterol and coronary heart disease (CHD), fruits and vegetables and cancer, foods that contain fiber from whole oat products and CHD, sugar alcohols and dental carries.
On October 26, 1999, the U. S. Food and Drug Administration , FDA, approved a health claim for soy, making it one of only a few foods permitted to have a health claim on its label.
