Conventional soybean processing is done with solvent extraction which processes soybeans into soybean oil and soy meal. Although this technology is highly efficient, it requires large economies of scale. Thousands of tons of soybeans must be processed by the factory for this technology to be cost effective. In many countries the demand for soybeans is much less than that. Processors in these countries require innovative technologies that will allow them to be profitable using smaller quantities of soybeans.
