Senior
Faculty Award for Excellence in Research
Lila
O. Vodkin
Lila O. Vodkin is a soybean molecular biologist of national and international
stature. She leads a research program to discover fundamental molecular
knowledge of soybeans, especially relating to economically important
traits such as protein quality and quantity and disease resistance.
The excellence of Vodkins research and expertise in soybean
genomics has led to two large grants that were funded during the last
year. She is co-principal investigator on a project funded by the
North Central Soybean Research Program and United Soybean Board entitled
"A Public EST (expressed sequence tag) Project for Soybean"
that involves several universities. She is the lead PI on the $4,460,000
National Science Foundation grant, "A Functional Genomics Program
for Soybean," that involves five universities. These grants in
this emerging area of plant genomics are a testament to Vodkin's leadership
and reputation in the field.
Joining the university in 1987, Vodkin has brought the plant molecular
biology "revolution" to the undergraduate and graduate classroom.
She works very closely with her students and has developed some outstanding
individual researchers through her rigorous and organized approach. |
