Clyde and Henrietta Downey Spitler Teaching Award
Outstanding faculty teaching is recognized by the John Clyde and Henrietta
Downey Spitler Teaching Award. All faculty members in tenured or tenure-track
positions with full-time appointments in the College of ACES are eligible
for consideration. Faculty teaching is defined to include all instructional
activities of the college, including those sponsored by University
of Illinois Extension.
Mildred Spitler Johnson of Urbana, Illinois, provided funds to establish
this award in honor of her parents, John Clyde and Henrietta Downey
Spitler. John Clyde Spitler began his early work with the Cooperative
Extension Service in 1917 and in 1932 was appointed a state leader
of farm advisers. He then served as assistant director of Agricultural
and Home Economics Extension in the college from 1937 to 1943, and
subsequently was associate director from 1943 until his retirement
in 1949. The award consists of a certificate of recognition and an
unrestricted personal award of $500.
The 1999 winner of the John Clyde and Henrietta Downey Spitler Teaching
Award is William C. Sullivan III. |
