Staff Award for Excellence
James E. Painter has taken innovation and creativity and mixed them with dedication, leadership, and enthusiasm to build a 21st century hospitality management program. He is well known on campus as an early adopter of Web-based instruction materials and has developed one of the top websites on campus. It would be unfair to Painter to leave the impression that he is strictly a "technology guru." As an instructor, he cares about his students and wants to ensure that he gives them every possible advantage to prepare them for their future careers. His outstanding creativity in applying Web-based instruction was directed at adding extra value, not substituting for quality, personalized instruction. In fact, Painter says that all his Web-based innovations buy him more time to spend with his students. In addition to teaching three or four classes a semester and managing the Bevier Cafeteria, Spice Box, and Food Science and Human Nutrition catering service, Painter has found time to garner grants in support of his activities, engage in service and outreach activities, form partnerships and alliances with the private sector, and complete his doctoral dissertation. |
