Senior
Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching
Philip
Buriak
Philip Buriak has been involved with University of Illinois students
since 1988 as a teacher, adviser, and mentor. His teaching philosophy
is to bring relevance, active learning, problem-solving strategies,
higher-order thinking skills, and independent learning to the courses
he teaches. These aspects, plus his enthusiasm and clear presentation
style, have led his students to place him on the "Incomplete
List of Teachers Ranked as Excellent" for each of the 20 semesters
he has taught.
Buriaks charge upon joining the colleges faculty was to
rebuild the agricultural mechanization program. While elevating and
transforming the curriculum to Technical Systems Management (TSM),
he more than tripled the enrollment of majors. In recognition of his
teaching skills, the Agricultural Engineering Department awarded its
Outstanding Teaching Award to Buriak in 1990, 1992, 1994, and 1996,
winning each year he was eligible.
Buriaks involvement doesnt stop outside the classroom.
He personally counsels every TSM major on course selection, personal
and professional development, and on job placement. Based on his outstanding
mentoring, the College of ACES awarded him the Karl E. Gardner Outstanding
Undergraduate Adviser Award in 1995. |
